Missouri Governor Mike Parson appointed Mel Tjeerdsma to the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents Friday afternoon.

Tjeerdsma, a former Northwest athletic director and football coach, joins the board on an interim basis. He can serve immediately, but will not be official until the Missouri Senate confirms his appointment.

Tjeerdsma fills the spot left open by Dr. Patrick Harr. His term is scheduled to end January 1, 2025, and until his successor is appointed. Harr's term expired on January 1, 2019, but continued to serve on the Board through the August 9 meeting.

Tjeerdsma lifted Northwest Missouri State football to the national stage winning 183 games between 1994 and 2010, including three national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame last December.

He also served as the athletic director at Northwest from 2013-2018. Bearcat teams won four national championships during that time frame, and Tjeerdsma played a major role in getting the Hughes Fieldhouse erected.
